Season Spotlight: summer!

water-safe summer

Drowning is the #1 cause of death for children aged 1-4. Drowning is fast, silent, and can happen in as little as 20-60 seconds – even with people nearby. Because water is part of our everyday lives—whether it’s swimming pools, bathtubs, or local lakes—water safety is everyone’s responsibility.

The National Drowning Prevention Alliance’s 5 Layers of Protection work together to significantly reduce the risk of drowning. These layers aren’t meant to replace one another—they work best when used together:

  1. Barriers & Alarms

  2. Supervision

  3. Water Competency

  4. Life Jackets

  5. Emergency Preparation

sun-safe summer

Most cases of skin cancer are caused by overexposure to ultraviolet (UV) rays from the sun, tanning beds, or sunlamps. Whether you are at the beach, hiking in the mountains, or simply enjoying a backyard barbecue, taking steps to protect yourself can help ensure a healthy, sun-safe summer.

The CDC and the American Cancer Society recommends you to work and play outside without raising your skin cancer risk by protecting your skin from the sun with these preventative measures:

  1. Seek Shade

  2. Wear Protective Clothing

  3. Use Sunscreen

  4. Check the UV Index

  5. Avoid Tanning Beds
