Soil Testing for New LotsPROCEDURES: Soil testing is only permitted from September 15 to June 30. If there is a question as to the maximum ground water table, additional testing and/or standpipe monitoring will be required during the wet season. (Feb.1-May 31) A QVHD sanitarian shall witness all soil testing. All scheduling will be done through the office of the Health District. Applications are required and fees are payable before testing. Soil testing consists of a suitable number (at least three) of deep observation test pits and soil percolation holes in the proposed primary and reserve area, and a downgrade deep observation test pit and percolation test to demonstrate that downgrade soils are suitable receiving soils. In some cases, additional pits may be required if ledgerock or high water table indicators are encountered. Hole locations are to be determined by the design engineer. The deep test pit is dug with a backhoe to a depth of at least four feet below the bottom of proposed system, or until ledgerock is encountered. The percolation hole is dug with a post hole digger and should be 6"-10" in diameter. Each percolation hole should be approximately 10 feet from the location of the deep pit, and be at the depth of the proposed system. Shallower or deeper percolation holes may be required depending on test pit inspection results. The percolation hole must be filled with 12" of water at least 2 hours before the sanitarian arrives (for adequate presoaking of that hole), but filled no earlier then 30 hours before the test. An additional 5 -10 gallons of water must be available at each percolation hole to conduct the test.
