Compact Fluorescent Lights (CFLs)
Most
people have seen (and may be using) those lights that look like soft-serve
ice-cream. They are called compact fluorescent lights. They are a simple
way for homeowners to reduce their energy bills while also doing something
beneficial for the environment. CFLs use less electricity than
incandescent lights and last up to 7 years. With energy prices going up
and the cost of CFLs coming down, more people are making the switch.
However, because these bulbs contain a small amount of mercury, there are
some special procedures you should follow for proper disposal (or if you
should break one).
Review the
DEP (Department of Environmental Protection) fact sheet and the
CT DPH Disposal Instructions
for more information.
