Annual Water Testing
Private Well Water Quality, Arsenic and Testing Recommendations
Periodic water quality testing of private well water is
recommended for all private well owners and should be part of routine
household maintenance. At a minimum, private well water should be tested
annually for total coliform bacteria, nitrite/nitrates, pH, color
and turbidity.

and Your Family's Health: Test Your Well's Drinking Water Quality Today
(PDF) Testing is especially prudent when there have been heavy
rains/flooding that can affect underground water tables. See
Flooded Well Fact
Sheet.

Arsenic and Well Water
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has recently lowered the
drinking water standard for arsenic from 50 ppb (parts per billion) to a
more conservative 10 ppb. Slightly elevated levels of arsenic above this
new standard have been detected in two private wells in Woodbridge. This
arsenic is believed to be naturally-occurring from features found in
underlying soil and bedrock. In Connecticut, arsenic has not been
traditionally tested in well water, but due to the EPA lowered-standard
and the confirmed slightly elevated levels detected in Woodbridge, it is
recommended that you add testing for arsenic to this year’s
annually recommended parameters. The fact sheet,
Naturally Occurring Arsenic in Private Well Water
(PDF), should answer
most of your questions about arsenic and drinking water.
